Soundforge is an multi-media installation that combines video, audio and sculptural elements in an interactive work that explores forging as an act of both fabrication and percussion. Viewers are initially confronted by video of forging synchronized with a 16 minute looping percussion composition. The video alliterates the act of striking in both music and metal fabrication, emphasizing the role of the hand in both activities.
Proceeding into the gallery the audience is able to use hand-carvedmallets to play three hand-forged human scale vibraphones. Each steel key is tuned to complement the musical score, allowing viewers to easily engage the work. It is also through striking that viewers help complete the work.
Soundforge is a two-year collaboration between metalsmith Gabriel Craig and music composer Michael Remson. The work debuted in the Fall of 2011 at the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, and was later shown in 2013 at the Museum of Contemporary Craft in Portland, OR, and again in 2015 at the Cameron Museum of Art, in Wilmington, NC.
